2020 has been a weird year, to say the least. Now that COVID-19 travel restrictions have been lifted and The Florida Keys are back open, there are lots of exciting things to do and places to visit. Palm Villa is a great place to relax in Key Colony Beach. Palm Villa is a 7 bedroom, 4 bath residence with a pool and large dock. It is not your typical rental; it provides more hands-on and specialized attention. For example, do you want your own fishing rods, coolers, and water gear, but don’t want to deal with it on the plane? Feel free to ship it before your vacation, and we can hold onto and have it at the property when you arrive. Little things that set us apart from the big rental companies.
Your property manager not only runs Palm Villa but also runs a multi-vessel fishing charter fleet based out of Key Colony Beach. With a phone call or text, we can get you on the water with some of the best fishing Captains in the Florida Keys. Main Attraction Charters have vessels to accommodate everyone, ranging from 32’ up to 49’.
While in Marathon, some of our favorite restaurants include Brutus Seafood and Market, Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House, and Lazy Days. Brutus Seafood is a one-stop-shop; they will serve you lunch or dinner, always have the freshest seafood for sale, and will ship your catch back home.
Florida Keys Steak and Lobster House have an extensive menu, ranging from sushi to top of the line beef steaks. They have something for everyone. And Lazy Days is a great place to get your fresh catch cooked. They offer family-style grilled, fried, blackened, and broiled and at an additional cost, they add their famous toppings and sauces to add the extra flare.
While in Marathon we highly recommend getting onto the ocean and taking advantage of mother nature, but if renting a boat or charter fishing is not your cup of tea, Sombrero Beach is a “larger” beach area, that is well maintained, has public restrooms, showers, and a playground for the kiddos. You could make a day of it, snorkeling the beach and packing a lunch.
Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters is a neat experience if the ocean is too intimidating. They offer different encounters. One is called Coral Reef where you swim with tropical fish and stingrays and even get to feed sharks! Don’t worry, the sharks are in a separate tank so you are ensured to leave with all the arms and legs intact. They also have a touch tank filled with little creatures to touch and hold (under the water of course), and other exhibits throughout the property such as Alligators, Lionfish, Turtles, Nurse sharks, Lobster, Stingrays, etc. They also have a small café located on the property where you can enjoy lunch or a snack and watch the boats drive through Vaca Cut Bridge.
Marathon is home to the Dolphin Research Center, one of the few places in the Florida Keys that allows visitors to swim with the dolphins. The dolphins are up close and personal, even if you choose not to swim with them. Sea lions are also on exhibit and shows are scheduled daily. If you have any small children, bring a swimsuit and towel, as the DRC has a small splash pad that helps cool down a hot summer day.
