As summer is winding down, so are the rentals. We have had some fantastic guests this summer. Our good friends and clients, Frank and Karen Smith, spent a month in Key Colony Beach, Fl Keys. Karen was due for some time off, and she wanted to be someplace tropical and warm to enjoy her sabbatical. Since they stayed at Palm Villa for a month-long vacation, they drove their two Labrador retrievers and a cargo trailer full of goodies to ensure they had all their essentials.

Within the first week of visiting the Keys, they experienced tropical storm Elsa, passing southwest of The Florida Keys. Although Elsa was not a major storm, we still experienced two days of outer bands, gusty winds, and lots of rain. Frank and Karen helped secure the patio furniture and trash cans to keep them from blowing away or causing damage. Frank and Karen mentioned they had previously experienced Tropical Storms in homes they rented in Galveston, Texas, but they felt much more secure in the Palm Villa structure. This is most likely because the Palm Villa rental property features solid masonry construction and impact-resistant windows and sliding doors.

Frank is an avid fisherman, so when he comes to Marathon, he prefers to bring his rods and reels, so he can fish off the dock, charter a few times with Main Attraction Sportfishing, and rent a boat to fish around the island. His wife Karen isn’t the only one who loves to shop in the Keys! Frank’s trip down here is not complete unless he visits Cudjoe Sales, the biggest tackle shop in the Florida Keys.

Frank and Karen have two kids, Tanner and Katie, both married with children. Tanner, his wife, and twin boys came down to visit with Frank and Karen and had an absolute blast. Tanner and Frank were fortunate enough to be in the Keys when all the conditions were right to catch Sailfish. This was a unique opportunity as summertime isn’t typically when you catch Sailfish in the Florida Keys. Luckily they also had a charter booked with Captain Marty Lewis of Main Attraction Charters, an expert at finding Sailfish. The father/son duo caught several Sailfish that day and had a memorable day on the water. Tanner not only got to catch Sailfish with his father, but he also got to tag and release some with Gray Fishtag Research. So cool!

Frank also spent time fishing off the dock of the Palm Villa with his young grandsons, hanging out in the backyard, and swimming in the pool. They also ventured throughout the Keys to discover fun things to do, such as Theater of the Sea in Islamorada, The Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key, The Marathon Turtle Hospital, and Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters. They reported all were great for young kids and highly entertaining for adults as well.

They spent a day in Key West, rented golf carts, and had a lot of fun zooming all over the island. They also checked out a hidden gem in the lower Keys called Boondock’s, where they ate at the restaurant and played mini putt-putt golf.

Some of their favorite restaurant finds were right in Marathon, nice and close to the Palm Villa house. They tried many during their month-long stay but said therir favorites were Brutus Seafood, Sparky’s Landing, Burdines Waterfront, and Lazy Days South were by far their most visited.

Oh, and you can’t forget dessert! Sweet Savannahs is a well-known staple in Marathon, located across from the Fire station. They have the BEST key lime pie and tons of ice cream flavors to choose from.

Overall they found the Palm Villa was perfect for their large family, to spread out throughout the house. They parked their trailer on the side of the house, and it was completely out of the way while they enjoyed paradise. They were even able to watch the 4th of July fireworks from the house!
